We’ve been running weapon lights on rifles for years — in low-light training classes, night shoots, competitions, and on our own home-defense setups. Over that time, we’ve tested more than 20 AR-15 lights mounted on real rifles and fired with full-power 5.56. Not just clicked on in the backyard. Not just compared by specs.

Some lights held up. Some worked fine for a while and then started showing little problems. Some didn’t belong on a serious rifle at all.

After all that testing, the Streamlight Protac HL-X is still the best AR-15 light for most people. It gives you the best mix of output, beam pattern, reliability, included mounting hardware, and price. It is not the most expensive rifle light in this guide, and that is kind of the point.

This is not a “most expensive weapon light wins” list. We ranked these based on what actually matters on a practical rifle: whether the light stays mounted, whether the switch works when you need it, whether the beam is useful indoors and outdoors, and whether the whole setup makes sense once it is actually on the gun.

That said, the HL-X is not the right answer for every rifle.

If you’re building a lightweight SBR, running night vision, setting up a dedicated home-defense rifle, or just trying to stay on a tighter budget, one of the other picks below may make more sense.

If you just want the short answer, start with the Streamlight Protac HL-X. If you want to know which AR-15 flashlight fits your specific setup, keep reading.

HOW WE TESTED

We tested these AR-15 lights on real rifles, not just loose in the backyard. They were mounted on AR-15s, fired with full-power 5.56, and used during low-light range sessions, night shooting, home-defense handling drills, and regular training.

We paid attention to the things that actually matter once a rifle light is mounted: beam pattern, indoor bounce-back, outdoor reach, switch reliability, mount security, pressure-pad placement, battery access, weight, and long-term durability.

I’ve used a lot of rifle lights over the years, and if I’m being honest, this is the one I keep coming back to. The Streamlight Protac HL-X Rifle Light isn’t the smallest, and it isn’t the fanciest, but it hits the sweet spot of performance, reliability, included accessories, and price better than anything else we’ve tested.

There are more powerful and more expensive lights out there. I’m not pretending the HL-X beats every premium light on output or build quality. But in actual use, it does the things I need a rifle light to do: it mounts securely, the switch works, the beam is useful, and it has held up for us.

One of my favorite things about the HL-X is that it comes with everything. You get a Picatinny mount, an M-Lok mount, and a remote pressure switch in the box. I appreciate that because it means you can actually mount the light and start testing it without immediately ordering extra parts.

Like the Protac flashlight I reviewed in our Best Tactical EDC Flashlight guide, this light is programmable, which sounds more complicated than it is. You can pick between three mode sets. Personally, I run it in Low/High mode on my home defense rifle. Indoors, low is more than enough and doesn’t turn white walls into a flashbang. Step outside, double-tap the switch, and you get full power. If you want high-only, you can set it that way, too.

The strobe is there if you want it. I don’t use it.

The pressure switch is solid and easy to use. The larger pad is momentary, and the smaller button is constant-on. It doesn’t feel cheap, it doesn’t take a ton of force to activate, and it’s been reliable for us.

The included switch mount is the one part of the kit I do not fully trust by itself. It works, but I always back it up with zip ties because I don’t trust friction-only mounts on a rifle that gets shot a lot.

Beam-wise, this light has a good balance of throw and spill. The center hotspot is bright and focused, but you still get enough halo around it to see what’s happening off to the sides. On the range at night, it had no trouble lighting up targets at distance.

The main downside? It’s not small. At nearly 7 ounces, you’ll notice it on super lightweight builds. If you’re building a tiny, ultra-light rifle, the Rail Mount 1 below makes more sense. But for a general-purpose AR-15, I’ve never felt the HL-X was too big or too heavy.

The Nextorch WL-50IR Rifle Light is not the light I’d tell most people to buy first. It is bigger, heavier, and more specialized than a normal home-defense rifle light.

This is a dual white light + IR light designed for people who actually run night vision or want a duty-grade setup without paying Cloud Defensive or Modlite prices. If you do not own night vision, I would skip it. If you do, the white-light/IR setup starts to make a lot more sense.

The included Picatinny mount is low-profile, solid, and easy to install. It does not include an M-Lok mount, which is a little annoying, but it is compatible with standard scout-style mounts if you want to change the position, like the Arisaka Defense side scout mount.

The switch system is the best part of this light. The pressure switch mount is excellent. It locks into the rail securely, the switch slides in and stays put, and it feels noticeably more secure than most of the rubber-and-hope solutions out there.

Mode selection is handled by a rear tail switch, which lets you choose between High, Medium, and Low without doing any weird double-tap gymnastics. Once you’ve set your mode, the pressure switch just turns the light on and off. Even better, that rear switch also lets you fully turn the light off for storage so you’re not accidentally draining batteries in the safe.

Switching between white light and IR is done by rotating the front of the light. It’s simple, obvious, and works even with gloves on. It is simple enough that I did not have to think about it while using the rifle.

This is a big, heavy light, though. At 8 ounces, you’re not putting this on a lightweight rifle. This is a duty rifle / night vision rifle / serious-use setup kind of light.

Beam-wise, the center hotspot is very bright and focused, with a good usable halo around it. When we tested it at night, it had no problem lighting up targets clearly, and the beam pattern is very usable for both indoor and outdoor work.

The big win here is getting both white light and IR in one unit for under $200. It’s also waterproof and shock-rated to 500G, so it’s built to take abuse.

The Streamlight Pro Tac Rail Mount 1 is the light I reach for when the HL-X feels like more light than the rifle needs.

This is the light I reach for when I’m building lighter rifles, SBRs, or anything where I actually care about weight and bulk. At just over 4 inches long and under 5 ounces, it keeps the front of the rifle from feeling overloaded.

Like the HL-X, it comes as a complete package. You get the light, a pressure switch, and (importantly) an M-Lok mount in the box. It sits tight to the handguard and doesn’t require buying extra parts just to make it usable. That alone makes it a better value than a lot of more expensive “modular” lights.

The 350-lumen number looks low compared with the bigger lights in this guide, but indoors, it is more useful than it looks on paper. It’s actually nicer than blasting yourself with 1000+ lumens off white walls at 2 a.m.

I usually run this one in Low/High mode for the same reason as the HL-X: low indoors, high outdoors if needed.

When we tested it at night, the center hotspot was good and usable, but the spill isn’t as wide or bright as the bigger lights. This is a close-to-medium-range rifle light. I would not pick it for long outdoor shots, but that is not really what it is built for.

It’s also about $30 cheaper than the HL-X, which makes it an easy recommendation if you want Streamlight quality without the size or the extra output.

I expected the Viridian 4LUX-2K-Duo to feel gimmicky. A light, laser, and foregrip in one unit sounds like the kind of thing that usually does three jobs badly.

It worked better than I expected.

After running it for a few months, it turns out this thing actually makes a lot of sense on a short-barreled, home-defense rifle, especially if you’re running a suppressor and limited on rail space.

From a survival and preparedness mindset, I like multi-purpose gear. This gives you:

  • A very bright white light
  • A visible laser
  • A vertical foregrip

All in one compact package.

You can run light only, or light + laser, and you can choose between low and high output. On high, it is extremely bright. Indoors, I would use low mode most of the time because the high setting can be a lot in tight rooms.

The activation is one of my favorite parts. The momentary switch is built into the foregrip, and it works from either side. That means no pressure pads, no wires, and no weird hand positions. Grab the rifle, squeeze, light comes on. Let go, light goes off. Simple. Reliable. Hard to mess up.

The laser is more useful than I expected. It’s visible well past 100 yards (which is honestly farther than you’ll ever use it on a defensive rifle), easy to zero, and behaves a lot like a red dot for close work.

Charging uses a magnetic cable, and I liked it more than I expected. You just plug it in, and if you forget and grab the rifle, the cable pops off without drama. It also comes with a small rechargeable battery pack that you can keep in the safe and use to top it off.

This unit mounts directly to M-Lok, so you don’t need a Pic rail section at all. It keeps the setup clean and compact.

Beam performance is excellent. The center hotspot is strong, and the spill is wide and bright. It reaches farther than most of the other lights we tested, which makes sense given the output and candela.

Now, the downsides: the ergonomics take some getting used to, and I don’t love this on longer rifles. It really shines on short barrels and home-defense setups where you want everything compact and simple.

Recommended for:

The Ozark Rail Mount LED Rifle Light is very much a budget option. It is not refined, and it is not what I would put on my primary defensive rifle.

But it did work in our testing, and that puts it ahead of a lot of bargain-bin rifle lights.

If you’re on a strict budget and you just need something that throws light downrange, this is the least-bad budget rifle light we’ve tested.

The light has a built-in Picatinny mount that can’t be removed. I’d rather have M-Lok, but honestly, Pic rail is still common, and you can always add a small rail section to an M-Lok handguard if you need to.

Ozark did improve the mount recently by adding a cross bar so it actually locks into the rail instead of just relying on friction. That’s a good change, and a necessary one.

The pressure switch is… not great. It works, but it feels spongy and cheap, and it doesn’t come with a real mount. You basically get Velcro and have to make it work. I stuck it to the top of my handguard and called it a day.

There’s also a side button on the light that lets you activate strobe or cycle modes, which I don’t really need, but it’s there.

Despite being rated at 600 lumens, it is noticeably dimmer in real use than the 350-lumen Streamlight. The beam is usable, but the spill is smaller, and the overall output just isn’t as impressive.

Still, it costs much less than the better lights in this guide and comes with a lifetime warranty. For a range rifle, loaner rifle, or temporary setup, I understand the appeal.

Recommended for:

What about Modlite, SureFire, and Cloud Defensive?

Yes, Modlite, SureFire, and Cloud Defensive make excellent rifle lights.

I’m not going to sit here and pretend they are bad just because they are expensive. They are rugged, bright, well-supported, and used by people who shoot a lot. If you already have one on your rifle and you like it, keep using it.

But this is not a “most expensive light wins” list.

For a normal home-defense or training AR-15, most people do not need to spend $300 to $500 just to get a reliable weapon light. And that price can climb fast. Buy the light, then the mount, then the tailcap, then the pressure switch, then whatever cable-management part everyone on the internet says you need this week.

At some point, you are spending optic money on a flashlight.

That does not mean premium lights are a waste. If I were setting up a duty rifle, a night-vision rifle, or a serious hard-use gun with no budget limit, I would look hard at Modlite, SureFire, and Cloud Defensive.

But for most people, the Streamlight Protac HL-X is still the smarter starting point. It has a useful beam, it has been reliable for us, it comes with the mount and pressure switch, and it does not require a second shopping trip just to make it usable.

That is why it wins here. Not because it is the fanciest rifle light. Because it does the job well, comes ready to mount, and leaves you money for ammo and training.


Other AR-15 Flashlights We Tried

We’ve tried a lot of other rifle lights over the years. Some that everyone else seems to recommend, and others that slipped across our bench because they looked interesting. These are not our top recommendations for most readers, but they are worth mentioning because they come up constantly when people shop for AR-15 lights.

Inforce WML Gen 3

The Inforce WML comes up a lot online because it is compact and simple. It’s compact and has a good reputation. But here’s our honest take:

  • Who it’s OK for: A simpler setup where you don’t want remote switches and don’t mind reaching down to activate.
  • Why we liked it: Lightweight, easy to mount, solid output for its size.
  • Why it’s not in our top picks: The activation buttons are in an awkward place on the light itself. On a dynamic rifle, that means you’re reaching, adjusting, and potentially losing control while you try to turn it on. For a dedicated home defense or duty rifle, that’s not ideal.

Surefire M640-series (with Separate Switch)

Look — Surefire makes really good stuff. The M640 is rugged and lights up like you expect from Surefire.

  • Why we liked it: Great build quality, consistent performance, compact footprint.
  • Why it didn’t make the list: The remote pressure switch is sold separately, and that switch alone costs more than several of the lights we did include above. For most of us, that’s a bad ROI. A flashlight that costs $400, which is more than a decent entry-level optic, like the Sig Sauer Romeo5, but still needs another $150 for a tape switch? Nah.
  • Who it’s OK for: People who already have Surefire, or people with deep pockets.

Modlite

Modlite lights are excellent, but they are built for people who are willing to pay for premium performance. Folks rave about them, and the output is excellent.

  • Why we liked them: Great beam patterns, solid construction.
  • Why they didn’t make the list: Price. For most home-defense and training rifles, the price is the hard part to justify. For everyday shooters and home defenders, you’re paying premium prices for performance most of us never actually need.
  • Who it’s OK for: Serious enthusiasts, armorers, pros who are actually issued them. Y’know, like Surefire.

Cloud Defensive (C4 / Other Models)

Cloud Defensive makes excellent lights with amazing performance and great ergonomics.

  • Why we liked them: Fantastic beam quality and user-focused features.
  • Why they didn’t make the list: Again, cost vs practical return for most shooters. Surefire and Cloud Defensive are amazing lights if money is no object, but for the 99% of folks, that price point doesn’t offer enough real-world advantage to justify skipping the mid-tier lights that already get the job done reliably.
  • Who it’s OK for: Shooters who want premium performance and are comfortable paying for it.

AR-15 Lights to Avoid

After testing enough rifle lights, I’m comfortable saying this: a lot of the cheap lights sold online do not belong on a serious rifle.

Here are the big categories of lights I recommend avoiding and why.

1. No-Name Amazon “Tactical” Lights

You know the ones. They come in a two-pack. They have words like Ultra, Blaze, Xtreme, and Military Grade in the title. They also usually cost about as much as a pizza.

I’ve personally had some of these turn off mid-course of fire. That’s not a “range inconvenience.” On a defensive rifle, that’s a dealbreaker.

If a light has:

  • No real brand
  • No recoil rating
  • No real warranty
  • And reviews that all sound suspiciously similar

…skip it.

2. Pistol Lights Pretending to Be Rifle Lights

Yes, some pistol lights are excellent. And yes, you can mount them on a rifle.

But most of the time, this leads to:

  • Awkward activation
  • Bad ergonomics
  • Or the “just buy another $150 switch” problem

If you already own one and are temporarily repurposing it, fine. But if you’re buying from scratch, get a light that was actually designed for rifles.

3. Magnetic or Clamp-Only Mount Systems

Anything that relies on:

  • Friction
  • Magnets
  • Some kind of adhesive, like duct tape

…is not something I want on a rifle that actually gets shot.

Recoil is a thing. Heat is a thing. Vibration is a thing. If the mount doesn’t positively lock into the rail, it will move eventually.

Ask me how I know.

4. Cheap Pressure Switches

A bad pressure switch can ruin an otherwise decent light.

Common problems:

  • They stop working randomly
  • They require way too much or too little pressure
  • They turn on and cycle through modes when you don’t want them to
  • Or they just feel like stepping on a wet sponge

5. Chasing Stupid Lumen Numbers

If a $40 light claims:

“20,000 LUMENS!!!”

…no, it doesn’t.

Even if it did, that doesn’t mean it’s usable. What actually matters is:

  • Beam shape
  • Candela
  • Lux
  • Spill
  • And how the light behaves indoors

More lumens does not automatically mean better. Sometimes it just means you blind yourself faster.


How We Tested These AR-15 Flashlights

We tested these lights the way they are actually used: mounted to rifles, fired under recoil, handled in the dark, and carried through real training.

A rifle light has a harder job than a handheld flashlight. It has to survive recoil, stay mounted, activate when your hand is in a shooting grip, and put useful light where you need it. A bright spec sheet does not mean much if the switch is bad or the mount walks loose after a few magazines.

A rifle light is not there to complete the look of the gun. It is there so you can identify what you are pointing the rifle at in low light.

That sounds obvious, but it matters. In the real world, you do not get to assume every noise in the dark is a threat. You need enough light to see what is happening, enough control to use the light without fighting the rifle, and enough reliability that the whole setup still works after recoil, heat, and regular training.

A good AR-15 light should do three simple things:

  • Turn on when you hit the switch
  • Put usable light where you need it
  • Stay mounted to the rifle

That is the baseline. Everything else — lumens, candela, switches, batteries, mounts, and price — only matters if it helps the light do those jobs better.

Start With What the Rifle Is For

Before you look at a single product page, think about what the rifle actually does.

A home-defense rifle lives indoors, around tight corners, white walls, mirrors, and short distances. An outdoor or property rifle is different. So is a night-vision rifle. So is a lightweight SBR.

That is why I do not believe in one perfect AR-15 light for everyone. Indoors, too much light can be miserable. Outdoors, not enough light is useless. Match the light to the rifle instead of buying whatever the internet is yelling about this week.

Size and Weight Matter

Weight matters more than people think.

Every ounce you hang off the front of a rifle changes how it feels. You might not notice it while standing still in the garage. You will notice it during a long range session, a class, or repeated presentations from low ready.

I do not automatically chase the biggest, brightest light. A smaller rifle light that stays out of the way and works with your grip is often the better choice.

Lumens, candela, and beam pattern

Lumens tell you how much total light comes out. Candela tells you how focused that light is and how far it reaches.

Both matter, but neither tells the whole story by itself.

I don’t care how good the light is — if the switch is bad, the system is bad.

You should be able to turn the light on without changing your grip or thinking about it. That’s the whole point. Some people like pressure pads, some like integrated switches, some like tail caps. The “right” answer is the one that works on your rifle, with your hands, the way you actually shoot.

I’ve had cheap switches fail, and it’s exactly as confidence-inspiring as it sounds.

For most rifles, I like the light tucked high and tight to the handguard, usually around the 1:30 or 10:30 position if the mount allows it. That keeps the rifle slimmer and helps reduce snag points. M-LOK mounts are usually the cleanest option on modern AR-15s, but Picatinny mounts still work fine if they put the light where you need it.

Pressure switches are useful, but they are not magic. A good pressure switch lets you activate the light without changing your grip. A bad one adds wires, failure points, and cable-management problems.

I usually like the pressure pad at 12 o’clock on the top rail, where I can reach it with either hand. That makes the rifle easier to use from either shoulder and keeps activation consistent.

The main rule is simple: you should be able to turn the light on without shifting your grip, hunting for the switch, or doing finger yoga.

Also, check cable management and suppressor shadow. Loose wires can snag, melt, or get in the way of your support hand. A suppressor can also throw a big shadow across the beam if the light is mounted too far back or too low.

Before you call the setup done, shoot with it. Make sure the switch is easy to reach, the sling does not interfere, the mount stays tight, and the light still works after live fire.

Battery Type

Rechargeable lights are convenient if you actually remember to charge them. Standard batteries are easy to store if you actually keep spares.

That is why I like dual-fuel lights when I can get them. They give you the convenience of rechargeable batteries most of the time, with the option to use common batteries when life gets messy.

Whatever battery type you choose, have a plan. A dead rifle light is just expensive rail weight.

Ignore Most of the Marketing

Strobe modes, fake lumen numbers, “military grade” claims, and dramatic names do not matter much.

What matters is boring: beam pattern, switch reliability, mount security, battery plan, and whether the light actually helps you use the rifle better.

If the light does those things, it is worth considering. If it only looks good on a product page, skip it.

For most people, I think the Streamlight Protac HL-X is the best AR-15 light. It has a useful beam, solid reliability, good output, dual-fuel battery support, and it comes with the mount and pressure switch you need to actually put it on a rifle.

There are more expensive rifle lights out there, and some of them are excellent. But for a practical home-defense or training AR-15, the HL-X is the one I would start with.

How many lumens do I need for an AR-15 light?
