I have been a TacPack subscriber for the past 6 months. After trying it, I believe it is one of the best tactical gear subscription boxes out there.

I am always a little anxious when I join a subscription box service since I don’t know exactly what gear I am going to receive. Of course, they always say that I will save money over buying each item individually. But will I really?

We have over 20 years of experience in both the military and in various shooting competitions. We use this gear every day, so we understand the value and usefulness. Plus, I am an actual TacPack subscriber, and I have firsthand experience with the service.

My TacPack Review

In this review, I will give you everything you need to determine if TacPack is a subscription box that is right for you. I will cover my personal experience with my own subscription, the gear I received, customer service, and the overall value of the subscription.

What is TacPack?

TacPack is a subscription box service that specializes in tactical and outdoor gear.

Each month, I receive a box of gear, and I don’t know what I am getting until I open the box. So, it is like getting myself a gift without knowing what I bought!

I noticed they usually include some type of firearm part or accessory, along with things like medical gear, tools, knives, range gear, and some clothing.

Most of the firearm parts are AR-15 related. I received a few stocks, grips, a rail-mounted flashlight, and a few build tools.

I received a couple of med kits from My Medic (See our My Medic Review for more on their kits) and a cool water bottle from Mission First Tactical. I also got a few knives and a multitool.

So, I would say the items lean heavily towards AR-15s and firearms, but there are other useful general outdoor items that may have a tactical flair.

What Is in a TacPack Box?

The biggest question I always have with subscription boxes is “what am I going to get?”

Here are a few of the TacPack boxes that I received in no particular order.

How Does TacPack Work?

TacPack has a three tier system. Depending on my budget, I can select the level that I prefer.

  • TacPack Lite – $29.99. Usually includes 3 or 4 items like magazines, grips, and small tools
  • TacPack Standard – $49.95. Includes everything in the lite version plus another item like a stock, gun cleaning tools, and foregrips.
  • TacPack Plus – $129.95. Includes everything in the standard version plus another larger item like a med kit, weapon light, and electronic ear muffs.

Note that in addition to the pricing above (which is accurate as of July 2025), tax and shipping are added to it. This will depend on which state you live in. I am in TN, and my total each month was $153.60 for the Plus tier. TacPack ships from Columbus, OH, so if you live out west shipping costs are likely higher.

When I first signed up, I was given the choice to receive one of the current boxes immediately, or I could wait until the new box was released the following month. The cutoff for the next box is around the end of the month, and they usually ship out between the 7th and 10th of each month.

I chose to wait until the next box since I ordered around the end of the month. After that, I was charged for the next month’s box around the 20th of each month.

Is the TacPack Website User Friendly?

Overall, the website is very basic and user friendly. There is a “My Account” page where I can see the payments I have made, my subscription status, view and change my shipping address, or change my email address or password.

I can easily change the subscription Tier that I am on, or cancel my subscription all together easily on the website. It doesn’t give me the run around when I cancel (I did it three times and the resubscribed a few days later just to test it), and I don’t have to call someone either.

Being able to cancel easily is always a concern for me with subscription services. Some lock me in and make it a real pain to cancel. Not so with TacPack, it is quick and easy.

My Favorite TacPack Items

While I certainly like the higher priced items in my TacPack boxes (like the MyMedic IFAK 2.0 and the Inforce WMLx weapon light) and the AR-15 parts, I find it is often the smaller items that I find the most interesting.

Most of the time I didn’t know these existed or just never took the time to research them.

Here are a few of my favorites.

TacPack Boonie Hat

I really like this Boonie hat

This is an exclusive item for TacPack, and you can’t find it anywhere else. While this isn’t the fanciest hat around, it is great for hot weather and keeping the sun off of my face and neck. Plus, I really like the Tiger Stripe camo.

Pew Tools Pivot Pin Installer

This Pivot Pin Tool is great

If you have ever built an AR-15 lower, you know how putting the pivot pin in can be a pain. I have launched many a spring never to be found again. This little tool makes it super easy and quick, and it has saved me a few springs so far.

Mission First Tactical 32 Oz Bottle

I really like this water bottle too

I always try to stay hydrated and take a water bottle with me when I travel or I am outside. I had never seen this when this one arrived. It looks like a M107 155m Howitzer shell, pretty cool!

Is TacPack Worth It?

For five months I took what I received in each box and looked up what each item would cost if I purchased it myself. I tried to find each item on Amazon if I could, and if not I went to either Primary Arms or directly to the manufacturer for pricing.

I found that each box is between 30% – 45% cheaper than if I bought the items myself.

The table below shows each box and the cost savings

BoxLevelMy Box CostSingle Item CostSavings
Feb 2025Plus$153.60$254.3140%
Mar 2025Plus$153.60$225.1232%
Apr 2025Plus$153.60$261.9541%
May 2025Plus$153.60$275.4744%
June 2025Plus$153.60$251.2539%

TacPack says on their website that each Plus box is worth $225 – $300. I was skeptical at first if this was really true. But after spending the time to be a subscriber and check each item, I found that it is true.

So, from a value perspective, it certainly is worth the money. All the items I received were quality name brand products. None of them were off-brand over-seas copies or anything that looked questionable.

I also received items that are useful that I never knew existed. For example, the pivot pin install tool is a great tool that I probably would never have purchased alone.

It is also fun to open the boxes since I don’t know what will be in them. It’s like a gift from someone (me!) each month.

A stack of the TacPack Boxes that Jason received
I have a big stack of these!

The only downside is that the box may contain something I may not use. It could come with an AR stock that I already have (or don’t particularly like), or another RATS tourniquet that I don’t want!

But I can always give items away or trade them for something else with the guys at the range.

Alternatives to Tac Pack

There are a few alternatives to TacPack to consider.

With subscription services, it is important to make sure you are not getting scammed. So if a subscription box seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Make sure to follow these criteria:

  • Must be a US-based company
  • Must have a dedicated website (not just on Amazon or some Third-Party site)
  • Must contain gear and not games or projects
  • Must be a reasonable cost
  • Must have good reviews in general
  • Must publish their cancellation policy

Considering these items, we have found two alternatives.

Crate Club

Crate Club is a similar tactical gear subscription box service. They also have three tiers that are a little more expensive than TacPack. When I was a Crate Club subscriber, I found the savings to be about 30% over buying the items individually.

Overall, I like the TacPack items a little better. The items in the Crate Club boxes weren’t bad, they just seemed to be not quite as useful to me.

BattlBox

Battlbox is one of my favorite subscription boxes, and I have been a subscriber for years. They focus more on outdoors and survival gear, and not as much on tactical and firearm related items.

The items in each box are useful and the savings is between 20% – 45%. They have four tiers and pricing is similar to TacPack.

We did a full review on Battlbox and also included more about Crate Club in our Full Battlbox Review. Be sure to check it out if you are considering either one of these.

What is the Best Tactical Subscription Box?

Overall, we find that TacPack is the best tactical subscription box. I use many of the items that I receive in my boxes and still get excited when I get them each month.

If you like to shoot and build your own AR-15s, it is definitely the right box to get.

Battlbox is a good alternative if you prefer more outdoor and survival gear and less shooting gear.
